DETROIT @ GREEN BAY (GB -11, 48)

LIONS vs. PACKERS 9/20/21

One week does not make a season. It’s clear that oddmakers understand that. After getting absolutely annihilated in Week 1, Green Bay heads into its Monday night game against Detroit as an 11-point favorite. The Packers were completely outplayed last week in a 38-3 loss to New Orleans.

The defense gave up 322 total yards, but more importantly they gave up five touchdown passes to new Saints QB Jameis Winston. That’s the same Winston that got fired in Tampa because he threw 30 interceptions in a single season. Winston didn’t throw a pick and wasn’t sacked in the win over the Packers.

His counterpart, Packers QB and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, did not have a similar day. Rodgers went 15-of-28 for just 133 yards. He threw two interceptions and was sacked once. The offense looked lethargic and Green Bay only had 43 rushing yards.

Enter the Detroit Lions. They may be just what the Packers need. Green Bay is 16-3 in its last 19 games against Detroit. The Lions and new head coach Dan Campbell gave up 442 yards of offense to San Francisco last week. Yes, Detroit came back from a huge deficit but they eventually did what the Lions do best – lose.

Detroit surrendered a 100-yard rushing game to 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell (104 yards). Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo was 17-of-25 for 314 yards. In a word, the Detroit defense is awful. Plus, they lost CB Jeffrey Okudah to a season-ending Achilles injury.

For the Lions, last week’s loss was its fifth in a row. Dating back to last season, Detroit has just two wins in its last ten games. But, the Lions are 4-2 ATS in their last six games. They have also played well against Green Bay recently. The Lions have only been blown out by the Packers once in the last ten games. In fact, Detroit is 7-1 ATS in the last eight games against the Packers.

Monday night’s total is currently 48. Detroit has trended to the Over in its last 11 games. Including last week’s 41-33 loss, the Over is 8-3 in those 11 games. Prior to their loss to New Orleans, Green Bay had four consecutive games in which the total went Over. Remember, the Packers had to the top scoring offense in the NFL in 2020 and the Packers return much of their lineup from last year.
